Is CrossFit for Beginners?
For many people, when they think of CrossFit, they think of the CrossFit Games, the world championships of CrossFit. This is where the fittest people on Earth compete in multiple workouts a day for multiple days, covering the gamut of fitness tests from how heavy you can lift, to how fast you can run long distance. It’s no wonder that so many of these people become intimidated by the thought of starting CrossFit.
What You See on TV Isn’t What Happens at AIO
However, what happens at the CrossFit Games is not what happens at your local CrossFit gym, especially with AIO’s beginner-friendly atmosphere.
At AIO, you’ll see people of all ages, shapes, abilities, and levels participating in the same workout — all following their own modified version. While some people might be doing pull-ups, others will be using a band to assist them and the rest may be doing ring rows, with their feet never leaving the ground.
In CrossFit, we have a saying: “The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind.”
This simply means that no matter who you are, you need to be able to lift objects from the ground, get up from a chair (squat), and perform a certain amount of work without getting out of breath. We just all do these activities at different levels.
When you walk into AIO, you’ll see this in action. We often have people in their 70s as well as in their 30s in the same class, performing the same workout at different levels. At the end of class, everyone is equally tired, giving each other fist bumps and talking about when they’re coming back for their next workout.
Why AIO Is Built for Beginners
At AIO, we are especially geared toward beginners because we all remember what it felt like the first time we walked into a CrossFit class.
When you arrive for your first class, you’ll be greeted by friendly faces and encouraged to keep your first workout easy — at least until you learn proper technique and how much work your body can safely handle. Coaches give you extra attention, and members are always happy to offer a helping hand to make your experience a smooth one.
You’ll also notice our workout board is divided into three sections:
- Competitive athlete
- Intermediate athlete
- Completely new to fitness
With the help of a coach, you’ll create the version of the workout that’s most appropriate for you.
Progress Happens Faster Than You Think
From there, you’ll continue learning proper technique and discovering how your body handles different workloads.
Through this process, you’ll begin to notice:
- Improvements in your fitness
- Better sleep
- A more positive mood
- Increased strength and endurance
- Feeling better in your body overall
Before long, you’ll go from being the beginner to being the person helping the next first-time member feel comfortable.
You’ll reach your initial goals — and then set bigger ones.
You’ll start telling your family and friends to join you for a class.
Because it changed your life — just like it changed yours.
