The Importance of Vitamin D

As Canadians, we’ve all heard of vitamin D and how we don’t get enough of it in the winter.

CConsidering it’s produced from exposure to the sun, it’s easy to see how we become deficient in it during months where we’re mostly inside—and when we do go out, we’re fully covered.

But how much does this really affect us? What does vitamin D do for us?

Vitamin D has many important functions in the human body. One of the most crucial, especially during the winter, is supporting our immune system. Studies show that people with low vitamin D levels tend to experience more frequent upper respiratory infections.

Although research on COVID-19 is still emerging, there is evidence suggesting that low vitamin D levels may be associated with higher rates of infection and more severe symptoms.

Vitamin D also plays a vital role in muscle and bone health. Supplementation has been shown to help prevent fractures by supporting the body’s ability to store calcium. It’s also believed to help preserve muscle fibers—maintaining muscle mass and strength as we age. This may explain why studies have found a decreased risk of falls in those who supplement with vitamin D.

Research further indicates that vitamin D deficiency may contribute to type 2 diabetes, dementia, cancer, and heart disease. And when you factor in its positive effects on Seasonal Affective Disorder, the case for adding vitamin D to your winter supplement routine becomes even stronger.

If you’re looking for an effective and safe vitamin D supplement, ask our Front Desk Staff or a Coach next time you’re in the gym about Vitamin D3 from ATP Labs, our preferred supplement provider. It’s produced right here in Canada, where supplement regulations are among the strictest in the world—making them some of the safest available anywhere.

So start taking vitamin D, and enjoy a healthier winter.
